Arthritis and Exercise

There are several types of arthritis with the most prevalent being osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis. Osteoarthritis affects more than 58 million US adults. The symptoms of osteoarthritis include stiffness, decreased flexibility, achiness, pain and sometimes swelling. These symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time. This can result in decreased function, the need for a joint replacement, and even disability.

There are many causes of osteoporosis with the most common factors being our habits, past injuries and genetics. The best treatment for most adults with arthritis is the right kind and amount of exercise (which can also help prevent osteoarthritis). Exercise relieves stiffness and pain and also strengthens your muscles to protect your joints. If you are not currently exercising, please start slowly. Walking, if you are able, is a great place to start. Strength training 2-3 times a week is also recommended.
