Memory and Exercise

Can you make your brain more fit?  Yes, you can!

Until recently scientists believed that the adult brain was pretty much fixed in its structure and function.  We now know that our brains are malleable, with the ability to change continuously as we age, depending on our lifestyle.  This is known as neuroplasticilty.

Recent studies have shown that exercise immediately changes how our brains function.  Regular exercise actually increases the volume of the hippocampus.  The hippocampus is involved in the formation of new memories and is also associated with learning and emotions. Thus, the effects of regular exercise can accumulate and lead to long-term improvements in our memory.

So, just like muscles being more fit with exercise, so can your brain.
