Migraines and Diet-Can What You Eat Reduce Your Pain?

Do you suffer from migraines?

Research suggests probiotics may help alleviate them.

Recent research suggests that intestinal microbiota and the gut-brain axis may play a role in the cause of migraines.  Intestinal permeability (leaky gut) is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged, causing undigested food particles, toxic waste products and bacteria to “leak” through the intestines and flood the blood-stream.  This may trigger migraines by activating the trigeminovascular system (neurons in the trigeminal nerve that innervate cerebral blood vessels).

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AND WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT IT?

First of all, take a probiotic supplement.  Research has shown that probiotics enhance the integrity of the intestinal lining.

Secondly, eat fermented foods (such as kimchi, kefir, raw sauerkraut) and prebiotics (such as onions, garlic, leeks, under-ripe bananas).  This will help establish a healthy gut microbiota.

Third, if you haven’t already done so, eliminate nitrate-containing food preservatives.  These are commonly found in preserved meats, where they are added to extend shelf-life.

Consuming a probiotic supplement, eating fermented foods and prebiotic foods, and eliminating nitrates will help restore a healthy intestinal barrier and balance your gut microbiome. By promoting a stronger gut-health, these small dietary habits may help alleviate your migraines.
